Access to university is significantly lower for students who have been in care, only 13 percent of students who have been in care for 12 months or more entered HE, compared to 43 percent of all other pupils (OFS, 2019). Therefore, this session would focus on the barriers young people from a looked after background face when it comes to accessing higher education and how school staff, teachers and advisors can provide extra help to looked after pupils when it comes to accessing higher education/university. This would be done by increasing their knowledge of the support that can be accessed by care leavers both when applying and studying at higher education. This session would highlight the support on offer from the University of Leicester and elsewhere.
