Student life

Your life as a Herts student will be absolutely buzzing, with so many wonderful things to get involved in whether you live on or off campus. Herts SU has over 100 different special interest societies that you can participate in. You can try everything from salsa dancing to baking, develop existing interests like anime and manga, and join groups which support communities such as the LGBT+ society, and various cultural groups.

And for all sports lovers, HertSquad offers a variety of ways for you to stay active. You can join in the regular Active Students events on campus and try different sports without committing long term. If you’d like to play at a competitive level, however, you can join a sports team, and you’ll be able to compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) leagues with other sporting universities from around the country.

What's it like to live in East of England?
Check out our region guide

The East of England is made up of five counties and cities like Luton, Norwich, and Cambridge. Made famous by its namesake university, picturesque Cambridge attracts droves of visitors, with graduates including Stephen Hawking and Emma Thompson.

Branch out and you’ll find Europe’s equivalent to Silicon Valley – Silicon Fen – a burgeoning hub for big tech players and software start-ups.

This corner of England has a star-studded history, too. Iconic movies like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and The Shining were shot at Elstree Studios in Essex. Meanwhile, the University of East Anglia served as Avengers HQ in multiple Marvel movies.

Campus and facilities

The university is based across two main campuses, College Lane and de Havilland; both linked with a free 7-minutes shuttle bus or just a 20-minute walk apart.

You'll have opportunities to try new things and meet new people in recreational spaces, cafes, gyms, and shops across both campuses. Some of our students’ favourite spots include the Starbucks and Subway on College Lane, and Café Ambition (which doubles as Bar Ambition) on de Havilland. Course facilities mirror those you'll use in your future career, and physics, engineering and computer science students will learn in our brand new Spectra building which opened in September 2024.

Accommodation

Modern accommodation is available on both campuses, and you'll be guaranteed a room on campus in your first year (subject to meeting application deadlines and personal needs). All bills are included, you'll have 24/7 support/security and its a great way to make friends and experience campus life.
