Student life
Sheffield is the fifth biggest city in the UK with over 60,000 students, so everything is geared towards you, from independent shops to student bars, and pretty much everything is in walking distance. In a 20-minute bus ride you can be in the middle of the Peak District, one of the most beautiful national parks in the country.
Our city is friendly, creative and scenic — and best of all, it’s surprisingly cheap. Sheffield’s cost of living is well below the national average, and thanks to the 60,000-strong student community you’ll find discounts around every corner. And our unique mix of city life and green space was recognised in 2021 when we were named the UK’s greenest city. *
At Hallam you'll have tons of chances to get involved with your student community, through activities, sports, volunteering and your Students' Union. Plus, there's plenty of support here to help you study and enjoy your time here.
Campus and facilities
The university is based across two campuses: City Campus and Collegiate Campus.
City Campus is in the middle of Sheffield city centre, just minutes from the bus and train stations. The buildings you study in are surrounded by shops, cafes, sports centres and cinemas — everything in the city centre is right on your doorstep.
Collegiate Campus is in the Ecclesall Road student district, which mixes some of Sheffield’s best bars, shops and restaurants with stunning parks for studying in the sunshine.
We’ve also invested over £100m in new facilities in the last five years, to help you study how and when you want. This means 24-hour libraries and study areas designed by our students.
