Student life

Whether it’s great shopping, sport, music or art, you’ll find it in the multicultural student hub of Leicester. Right on the doorstep of our central campus, the diverse city centre boasts amazing bars and nightlife alongside ranking fourth for the most vibrant city in the UK (Top Cities Vibrancy Report, 2022) - and we’re one of the few unis in the UK where you’re getting the best of both worlds.

Leicester ranks in the top ten for ‘most affordable student cities’ in the Student Living Index (compiled by NatWest) for food, rent and fun, meaning you’ll be able to enjoy everything the city has to offer whilst studying with us.

The De Montfort Students Union also features many inclusive student groups and societies so you’re sure to make new, life-long connections with like-minded students.

Whether you’re Leicester born-and-bred, or calling the city home during your student journey, we can’t wait to help you find your people and show you just how much there is to explore.

What's it like to live in East Midlands?
Check out our region guide

The East Midlands comprises five counties, with its main cities being Derby, Leicester, Lincoln and Nottingham.

The region has plenty of history, boasting both the world’s first factory and its first pub (allegedly). It also has many castles, cathedrals and stately homes, including Chatsworth House, which has served as the backdrop to period films like Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice.

And, of course, you’ll find the gorgeous Peak District here. If you end up studying in the East Midlands, definitely make a trip to explore its rolling green hills, peatlands, and quaint market towns – like Buxton, the caverns of Castleton, and Bakewell (home of the famous tart).

Our campus also features the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Leisure Centre, a fully equipped gym and leisure centre boasting a climbing wall, dance studio, 25-metre swimming pool and a packed programme of workout classes for all abilities and fitness levels.

The DMU Food Village is on hand for breakfast, lunch and dinner, providing a vibrant place to eat and socialise and our Riverside Café overlooks the beautiful canal and landscaped grounds of our Vijay Patel building.
