In episode one, Sarvin explains economic growth and breaks down Gross Domestic Product (GDP) before introducing the concepts of unemployment and inflation and how they impact the economy. In episode two, Sarvin explores some of the statistics and data surrounding unemployment and inflation. Sarvin also addresses other inequalities in the economy, such as the gender pay gap and unemployment in minority groups. In episode three, Sarvin explains the role of governments and policymakers when it comes to combatting inequalities in the economy. Sarvin also addresses the global issue of poverty and its relationship with economics. In the final episode, Sarvin recaps the concept of macroeconomics, explains the crucial relationship between economics and data, and outlines the importance of analytical skills as an economist. Sarvin then sets an exciting activity which encourages you to study some data on the UKs economy and identify the correlations in the data with real-world events.

Meet the academics

Sarvin Hassani

Sarvin Hassani is the senior lecturer in International Business at Anglia Ruskin University, and the Lead of Centre for Student Success (CfSS) in the Faculty of Business and law. Sarvin has great experience of teaching at all levels and creating module content and learning activities. She always looks at linking current affairs into the classroom for debates and connects them to learning outcomes. In addition to teaching, Sarvin has been the lead on timetabling and worked on improving and evolving the student experience as well as creating innovative onboarding processes for new students. Sarvin is currently working on her PhD with the research topic of 'Investment intangible assets and firms' productivity: Investigating the scale effects, heterogeneity and the role of market power'.
