Re-platforming Topaz - our core system database

As part of our switch to a new product-based way of working in 2020, we told you that this shift would enable us to continue delivering and enhancing services and features for our customers.

This includes Clearing Plus and the new RPA process, and we’re also making some important changes to our internal systems and structures to allow us to deliver change more robustly and quickly in future. Read on to find out more about re-platforming Topaz, our core system database.

What is it?

We are re-platforming our core systems to ensure they are more flexible and scalable, supporting evolving admissions processes and our ability to easily make changes. As a wide-ranging change with significant impact, we have engaged specialist help and will be running an extensive testing programme to ensure the systems remain functional throughout.

Why are we doing it?

  • Our core systems are large, and costly to run and change - we will leverage modern cloud technologies to deliver the same features and functionality in a more efficient and cost-effective way, freeing resources for other changes.
  • Admissions processes are changing, whether through gradual evolution or Reform, and this helps us to adapt to these changes.
  • We have a window of opportunity to achieve this before any significant work for Reform would need to start.

When will this happen?

Current timelines are being confirmed but we have an ambitious schedule to deliver this in time for the 2023 entry cycle.

How does this impact me?

The new system will be available for you in test environments, and we’ll be asking you to participate in the external testing to ensure data is migrated. We’ll keep you updated with this work including other actions that might be required as the project progresses.
