Mechanical, civil, aero, acoustical, maritime – which engineering subject should I study? Advising students on choosing engine

Tuesday 4 June 2019 14:30 – 15:30
Breakout session
Open to all

Summary

Studying engineering at university can lead to exciting career prospects, and top salaries across a wide range of industries. At present, with over 3,500 courses available in universities throughout the UK, advising students on what and where to study can seem an overwhelming task. Furthermore, prospective students often ask, ‘I’m interested in engineering but unsure on which bit to focus on, can you tell me a bit more about it?’.

Ranked in the top ten engineering faculties in the UK, the University of Southampton has a world-class reputation for engineering degrees, and in this session we take a look at the breadth of the subject and the range of engineering disciplines and job opportunities available to students.

Learning outcomes

Delegates will take away from the session:

  • an overview of the different engineering disciplines to share with the students they are advising
  • a largely pictorial introduction to the various different types of engineering disciplines, what they involve, their practical nature, and their aspects of ‘learning-by-doing’
  • the exciting careers available to engineering graduates
  • how engineers make a difference to the lives of individuals, and society as a whole
