Chemistry has been called the 'central science', due to its role in linking the physical sciences with the life sciences (biology, medicine) and much of the applied sciences and engineering. Likewise, contemporary research within a chemistry department can be very broad, including theoretical, computational, material, and biological chemistry, alongside the more traditional physical, organic, and inorganic chemistry disciplines. As a result, an education in 'chemistry' can be much broader than many students may realise when studying e.g. A level Chemistry. Examples of contemporary research, as well as typical career options, will be presented, to give teachers and advisers a clearer idea of why students may wish to pursue a chemistry degree, and what a degree involves, based on the University of Manchester's example.
