A unique environment inspiring performers to achieve in our fast-paced creative economy
In 2017, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire completed an exciting merger with Birmingham School of Acting. It has successfully brought together complementary disciplines for an unrivalled creative experience. As a student, you will benefit from phenomenal music teaching and performance spaces which are located alongside state-of-the-art production and recording facilities.
Musicians are able to draw on performance skills or promote their work across digital channels, and actors and set designers can deliver performances where music is essential to the artistic results.
It’s an exhilarating place to learn with a unique, electric atmosphere, which inspires and brings together acting and musical talent. Our courses are helping students meet the demands of today’s fast-paced creative economy.
We also have a highly successful Junior Conservatoire, which provides young musicians with specialist tuition that develops and nurtures individual talent.
Under the name of Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, actors and musicians in training have more opportunities to collaborate and share ideas.

From full-time course directors to our specialist visiting tutors and guest directors, every one of them has enjoyed a successful professional career and many are still active artists and practitioners.
Ensuring our graduates realise their ambitions
We offer many professional experiences which support graduate employment and offer excellent collaborative opportunities to broaden your career potential.
Our strong links with the music and performance industry give you the chance to forge connections and undertake work placements and we help you to focus on and realise your ambitions.
The possibilities for you to develop your career will be endless and you will leave equipped as an employable professional.
“The main thing that I appreciated was the real world lessons we were taught; lessons in how to cope with being self-employed and how to promote yourself as a full-time musician. That kind of stuff is invaluable. It’s all well and good being a great musician but that alone won’t make you a success." -- Harry Lightfoot
A highly respected institution which is renowned for training household names
With a history dating back to 1859, the Conservatoire has a longstanding reputation for producing high calibre graduates who fulfil their creative and professional aspirations.
Famous musical alumni include soul singer-songwriter Laura Mvula, baritone Rhydian Roberts and conductor Michael Seal. Among our successful acting alumni are household names Helen George, Catherine Tyldesley and Nicol Williamson.
The University is already the largest provider of creative courses in England outside London and we were ranked as a top three university in the UK for Drama and Dance in the Guardian University Guide 2019.
It is our intention that Birmingham will be the place to come for those set on a career in music or acting and we welcome new talent to our creative community.
