Student life

This is a place where all students can grow, lead and make a difference. With more than 44,000 students from 170 countries, we are a mini metropolis where a multicultural community comes together.

Our campus boasts grand Victorian buildings blended with modern developments, like our Engineering Buildings, one of the largest multi-disciplinary engineering hubs anywhere. You’ll also find quiet corners, landscaped gardens and cafés.

Known for our friendliness and character, Manchester is one of many vibrant cities nestled among stunning countryside. We are located close to many other northern cities and have the beautiful Peak District National Park on our doorstep. With well-connected travel links, the rest of the UK is but a train ride away.

Our campus offers opportunities to get involved in activities and meet new people. With more than 400 societies and sports clubs, our Students’ Union is the largest in the UK.

What's it like to live in North West?
Check out our region guide

The North West is made up of Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire, and Merseyside. Its two biggest cities, Liverpool and Manchester, are global landmarks in music and football history.

The region was the heart of the industrial revolution – at one time, Lancashire produced half the world’s cotton. Many architectural reminders of this era remain, like Liverpool’s Royal Albert Docks and Chester's Victorian centre.

The stunning Lake District – home to England’s highest peak, Scafell Pike – needs no filters, while Blackpool is a seaside adventure.

Campus and facilities

The University’s main campus is on Oxford Road, just a short walk or bus ride to the city centre. You'll spend a lot of time along here, going to lectures, seminars or labs; finding a study space or collaborative working area; or meeting friends at at our green spaces.

Whether it’s relaxing at a cafe or bar, shopping at our sustainable food shop or supermarket, or perusing the Whitworth and Manchester Museum, there’s plenty to explore between studies.

Cosy campus spaces provide hot water and microwaves at no cost and our Students’ Union has a sustainable food shop. The biggest in the country, the Union boasts many societies to join and has a range of student support. Student Support Hubs are also located around campus and have expert teams to help you.

Our buildings are a mix of traditional and contemporary: from the historical Library and stunning Samuel Alexander Building to our 24/7 Alan Gilbert Learning Commons and top of the range Nancy Rothwell Engineering Building.
