Join Lynne Hugill from Teesside University as she explores the world of fashion and fashion communication. In episode one, Lynne explains the relationship between fashion and identity and how things like politics, environmental challenges, culture, society, and history have all impacted the way fashion has developed across time. In episode two, Lynne looks at the specifics of sustainability in fashion and poses the question: is fashion destroying our planet? Lynne also looks at the many ways fashion can influence societal change and how designers can do more to promote sustainability. In episode three, Lynne examines how technology has made a mark on the industry, explaining how social media, AI, virtual reality, and other digital advancements have brought the fashion industry into the modern era. In the final episode, Lynne recaps why promoting sustainability is vital for the fashion designers of tomorrow. Lynne then sets you an activity which encourages you to consider the clothes you have, and how you can do more to save the planet. Lynne also offers some guidance of where the fashion industry is going, and tells you how you can prepare for the future of the industry.

Meet the academics

Lynne Hugill

Lynne Hugill is a Principal Lecturer at Teesside University and the course leader of the BA Fashion course. Before joining Teesside University Lynne has worked in London designing for high-street fashion retailers. Her vast experience covers working with manufacturers supplying the likes of M&S, developing marketing concepts and liaising with factories and customers in China, Hong Kong, Israel, Egypt and Jordan. She has a successful freelance design consultancy role with companies such as Marks & Spencer, Disney, and Mothercare, designing fashion, textiles and homeware alongside branding, web and graphic design. Lynne’s area of expertise is digital skills for fashion including the use of 3D application, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. She is skilled in design, fashion graphics, branding, portfolio development, digital fashion illustration, web design and from her industrial experience professional skills. Her current research is centred around future fashion with a focus on digital technology, sustainable materials, and the circular economy.
