Does white-collar crime matter?‘. Science says climate change and global warming are heating and freezing the planet. Can corporations and their directors and chief executive officers be held to account if they pollute the atmosphere, the ocean, the landscape with CO2 and waste? Can governments be held to account if they breach a duty of care toward young people whose wellbeing may be threatened? White collar crime (crimes carried out by the rich and powerful, the people in suits) may be applied to environmental acts that threaten the Earth. Exploring the possibility through cases in the UK, the Netherlands, France, the US and Australia provides an international feast of how the law might work.
Wed 13 November 2024 - 16:00 to 17:00

Are you an aspiring solicitor or barrister? Or do you want to work in finance, public service, risk management, or governance? This webinar will illustrate how Buckingham’s two-year law degree programmes provide a unique grounding in the knowledge and skills required for a successful legal-based career. Unique because of our small group teaching, our flexibility (with entry points in September and January), and our four full teaching terms a year, allowing you to complete your degree in two years. For those interested in qualifying as a solicitor in the UK, the webinar will explain the recent introduction of SQE (Solicitors Qualifying Examinations) and how our law degrees help prepare you for these professional exams, enabling you to choose the accelerated SQE1 preparation courses after graduation. Our innovative and diverse curriculum also contributes to preparation for the practice orientated SQE2, both SQE1 and SQE2 being necessary for qualification as a solicitor.

For those students wishing to qualify as an English barrister, we will explain how our law degrees (single or combined honours) satisfy the academic component of Bar training, the necessary first step to qualifying as an English barrister.

Our LLB also satisfies the necessary first step for qualifying as a lawyer in various common law jurisdictions, including Canada, Nigeria, the Bahamas, and Bermuda. In addition, we often accommodate the additional requirements needed to practise in some other common law countries and, if you are an overseas student, we are willing to explore what modules you will need to qualify for your jurisdiction.

We will also explain how we offer of a broad range of extra-curricular opportunities to develop your professional skills and experience of legal practice.

At this taster webinar, you will meet a member of the law academic team who will explain these aspects of our offer, and more. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions to an academic and a current student, via online chat.
