The University of Cumbria has roots in teaching extending back to 1894, when Charlotte Mason established a teacher training college at what is now our Ambleside campus. She was an educational pioneer penning many books on the subject and promoting a more humanistic approach to teaching. She aimed to encourage educators and students to develop a ‘love of learning’.
