What applicants need to do
After applicants have chosen a referee who agrees to provide a reference upon request, and submitted their application, the details are sent straight to the conservatoires. Each individual conservatoire will then only contact the referee if additional information is needed to help make a decision on the application.
As a referee for a conservatoire applicant, your role is pivotal in providing insights into the applicant’s readiness and suitability for conservatoire-level study.
Looking for guidance for 2025 entry?
Here’s what you need to know about the process and your responsibilities:
Understand your role: You will only need to provide a reference if the conservatoire contacts you for more information. The conservatoire will give you specific guidance on what they need to know about the applicant, such as their skills, achievements, contextual information or readiness for the chosen program.
Focus on skills and potential: If you are contacted, aim to highlight the applicant's musical or performance skills, technical proficiency, and any relevant academic abilities. Include examples of how the applicant has demonstrated commitment, progress, and passion for their discipline.
Personal qualities matter: Conservatoires also value attributes such as resilience, dedication, and the ability to thrive under pressure. Where possible, provide examples that show the applicant’s character and how they might excel in a conservatoire environment.
Timely response: Be prepared to respond directly to the conservatoire within a reasonable timeframe, typically around two weeks. Conservatoires will usually specify the deadline for your response. Make sure you have all the necessary details from the applicant so you can write a focused and relevant reference.
See our advice for applicants about their references
We recommend you keep a copy of each reference you write for your records.
If you feel you are unable to provide the information required by the conservatoire it is important that you let the applicant and the conservatoire know as soon as possible, so that an alternative referee may be provided.
International students
If you are providing a reference for an international student, you must write in English. If the applicant's first language is not English, comment on their ability to write and speak in English and say if any of their studies were taught in English. Explain any break in the applicant's education and how they compare with others in your class.
