'Take the Spotlight!' competition terms and conditions

1. The competition promoter is: UCAS (company no. 2839815) whose registered office is at Rosehill, New Barn Lane, Cheltenham, GL52 3LZ ("UCAS").

2. Employees of UCAS and its associated, affiliated, or subsidiary companies, their families, agents, or anyone else connected in any way with the competition, are not permitted to enter.

3. There is no entry fee and no purchase necessary to enter this competition. However, entrants should be aware that they may be subject to data charges depending on their own individual arrangements for internet access.

4. Entry is open to current students of the following conservatoires:

  • Birmingham Conservatoire
  • Leeds College of Music
  • Royal Academy of Music
  • Royal College of Music
  • Royal Northern College of Music
  • Royal Conservatoire of Scotland
  • Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama
  • Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance

Each entrant may only enter once.

5. Route to entry for the competition and details of how to enter are via www.ucas.com. Any information provided by entrants will be used in accordance with UCAS’ privacy policy at www.ucas.com/privacy-policy.

6. To enter this competition, entrants must produce an original short video (maximum one minute long) and upload it via the competition link on ucas.com before the closing date. UCAS will not be liable for technical, hardware, or software failures of any kind, or lost or unavailable network connections that may limit or prohibit an entrant’s ability to participate in the competition. Music used in the video must also be original or will be removed from the competition.

7. The closing date for entry is midnight (UK time) on 26 February 2016. After this, no further entries to the competition will be considered.

8. No responsibility can be accepted for entries not received by the closing date, for whatever reason.

9. Entries must be the entrant’s own, original work and must not have been previously published anywhere else.

10. Entries must not contain anything defamatory, obscene, blasphemous, illegal, or otherwise inappropriate (as may be deemed by the promoter in its absolute discretion), or any content advertising or promoting any commercial third party.

11. Entries must only contain content created entirely by the entrant, or for which the owner’s permission to use has been obtained by the entrant. Music, video, or TV excerpts and screenshots or other images are usually someone’s copyright – even if it is in the public domain. If you are in any doubt about whether you can use content that you haven’t created yourself, it’s best not to use it.

12. UCAS reserves the right to require proof that necessary consents have been obtained, and/or to exclude entries which UCAS reasonably considers may infringe any third party rights.

13. By entering, entrants:

a) agree to:
(i) grant to UCAS, an irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide, exclusive, royalty-free, transferable licence (with right to sub-licence) to use, publish, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, edit, perform, display, and broadcast their entry, in any media formats and through any media channels
(ii) waive all moral rights and performers' rights arising under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, or similar rights arising under the laws of any jurisdiction in their entry
(iii) indemnify UCAS irrevocably against all and any costs, claims, expenses, and liabilities resulting from the breach of any of these terms and conditions

b) undertake and warrant that they have:
(i) explained to all performers in video entries the purpose of the video
(ii) obtained all consents and waivers from performers necessary to enable UCAS to make full use of their entry in any and all media, without payment, liability, or acknowledgement to any performer

14. UCAS intends that a selection of entries (or parts of entries) will be used in its marketing and promotional activities, and entries may be edited, published, and otherwise used in any way (including online) for any purpose. However, the promoter shall be under no obligation to use any entry (including the winning entry).

15. All valid entries received before the closing date will be reviewed by a panel of judges who will (using the judging criteria set out in clause 16) choose the winning entry. The judges’ decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into.

16. The judging criteria and apportionment are:

(a) originality and insight into the conservatoire experience = 50%

(b) powerful expression and advocacy for conservatoire study = 50%

17. The winner agrees to the use of his/her name and image in any publicity material.

18. The winner's name, county, and the winning entry will be publicised via www.ucas.com and our social media channels within 28 days of the closing date.

19. One winner and two runners up will be chosen. The winner will win £2,500,and the runners up will each win £500. No alternative to the prize will be offered. The prize is not transferable. The prize is subject to availability and UCAS reserves the right to substitute the prize with another of equivalent or greater value without giving notice.

20. Other than death or personal injury arising from the negligence of UCAS or its employees, UCAS will not be liable for any loss or damage arising out of the winner’s enjoyment of the prize.

21. By entering, entrants agree to abide by each and all these terms and conditions. UCAS reserves the right to exclude entrants not complying with any of these terms and conditions.

22. UCAS reserves the right to cancel or amend the competition and these terms and conditions without notice in the event of a catastrophe, war, civil or military disturbance, act of God, or any actual or anticipated breach of any applicable law or regulation, or any other event outside of UCAS’ control. Any changes will be notified to entrants via www.ucas.com.

23. The decision of UCAS in respect of all matters to do with the competition will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

24. The competition and these terms and conditions will be governed by English law and any disputes will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England.
