Upholding the embargo agreement

We’ve been receiving requests for guidance on upholding the embargo, when an applicant is taking an embargoed qualification (e.g. SQA qualification or A level), alongside a non-embargoed qualification (e.g. BTEC).

  • If the applicant has clearly met the conditions of your offer despite outstanding results (e.g. has met a Tariff points offer on their BTEC results alone, before you’ve received A level results), you can confirm their place, if you so choose. We strongly recommend you do not make a decision on an applicant if it is not in their benefit (i.e. rejection or change course offers), when you are not in full receipt of all their results.
  • If it would be impossible for the applicant to meet the conditions of your offer despite outstanding results, you can reject them, if you so choose.

Please note, you cannot break the embargo outside of the specified embargo periods (because you are not in receipt of any sensitive material). If you are making a Confirmation decision not based on results, we recommend you clearly explain this to the applicant, so you do not imply that you have them.
