An update on name-blind and unconscious bias

We are currently in discussions with BIS and other stakeholders, and a report with our proposals for addressing unconscious bias in admissions will be published in due course.

Posted Wed 8 June 2016

This will include a clear outline of what the second stage of our ‘name-blind applications’ work will look like.

UCAS and Supporting Professionalism in Admissions (SPA) will be moving ahead with a number of activities to support minimising unconscious bias in admissions, including the following activities.

  • This year SPA will be developing and publishing a range of good practice and staff development materials, aimed at raising awareness of unconscious bias and minimising any risk of bias in the admissions process. This will include a presentation for HE staff to adapt and use in their teams, good practice guidance, a module on unconscious bias for the SPA good practice toolkit, and one or more staff development events. More information will be available on the SPA website.
  • On Monday 9 May, we sent providers new data on the sex, area backgrounds and ethnic group of applicants, containing statistics covering applications, offers and acceptances. This data will be published on ucas.com, unless specifically requested otherwise, on Thursday 9 June. Find out more
