Teacher training skills tests and UCAS Teacher Training Apply update

In July, the Department for Education announced plans to replace teacher skills tests with provider-led assurance of fundamental English and maths skills.

Read the announcement.

This was followed up later in the year with confirmation that any student starting their teacher training course after 1 April 2020 would not require teacher skills tests.

In line with this change, we’ve removed the question about skills tests from UCAS Teacher Training Apply for the 2020 cycle. Please be aware, although applicants will not be asked the question, providers will receive a pre-set response of ‘no’, to minimise technical impact and disruption.

Providers offering courses starting before 1 April 2020 should continue to include teacher skills tests as part of their entry requirements.

To support this change, we’ve updated our information and advice on ucas.com and in the UCAS Teacher Training Admissions Guide 2020.
