Reminder: Adding HECoS codes for 2019

HECoS codes will be mandatory for undergraduate and postgraduate 2019 courses, including those with variable start dates.

Posted Wed 14 February 2018

You need to have completed adding your HECoS codes by Tuesday 8 May, when the 2019 entry search tool goes live. You will not be able to publish your 2019 courses if they have not been assigned HECoS codes.

This change in functionality has been developed by HESA to replace the JACS system, and will require a cross-provider approach. Unlike JACS, the subject code identifiers are randomly generated to avoid the coding frame running out of space.

HECoS codes do not require balance indicators, just a percentage against each to represent the amount of the course content the code covers. For each course, at least one, and no more than five, codes can be added. The course subject(s) should represent directly, or relate very closely to, the qualification subject(s) associated with specific deliveries of that course.

If you haven’t already, please take this opportunity to test how to assign HECoS codes to your 2019 courses in our new test, training, and development environment. HESA has developed an implementation guide to help with this deployment.

You can find out more on our HECoS web page, and on the HESA website.
