Handling text in our application management service (AMS)

Currently, we translate Unicode characters in applications to ASCII, for providers that don’t use Unicode. We’ll continue to provide this translation through the current link products (odbc-link, xml-link, web-link) while they are supported. However, to improve the applicant experience, our new AMS will support the UTF-8 Unicode standard when handling text only.

When we go live with our new AMS, UCAS Postgraduate providers continuing to use xml-link (until it is decommissioned) will still be able to consume their preferred standard. The text will only be available as Unicode to UCAS Postgraduate providers using our new digital user interface or our APIs to manage applications.

This principle will be extended to the other UCAS schemes when they are migrated to the new platforms.

If you have any queries about this, please contact your technology relationship manager.
