Initial Teacher Training entry requirements for numerical GCSEs

The Department for Education has now clarified the position regarding the minimum entry requirements for learners holding numerical GCSEs and applying to Initial Teacher Training (ITT) programmes in England.

Whilst we won’t see large numbers of these learners entering higher education until 2019, it’s likely that we will see small numbers enter in both 2017 and 2018.

The Department for Education has sent the following communication to providers:

‘GCSEs awarded from summer 2017 onwards will be graded under a new system of numerical grades from 1 to 9 (where Grade 9 is the highest), replacing the current A*  – G grading system.

‘The entry requirements for Initial Teacher Training, which are currently the demonstration of a standard equivalent to Grade C in mathematics, English (and science for primary applicants only), will be maintained at the same level in the new grading system and applicants taking the new GCSEs will therefore be required to demonstrate a standard equivalent to Grade 4 or above in the relevant subjects. This will be kept under review as more data becomes available and may be subject to future revisions.’

The Welsh Government has also confirmed arrangements for ITT. Applicants will be required to achieve a minimum of a Grade 5 in English and mathematics, and a Grade 4 in science for primary school provision.
