Google Analytics referral traffic from our search tool

We’ve recently received queries from some providers using Google Analytics, about a drop in referral traffic from our search tool

Posted Wed 15 November 2017

To safeguard our online presence, we’ve moved all our sites from http:// to https:// which may have affected your web analytics.

Our previous search tool – search.ucas.com – used HTTP pages. However, digital.ucas.com (the new search tool) uses HTTPS. These pages (which have a padlock or ‘secure’ icon in the browser) do not pass referral information to HTTP pages.

Therefore, if your website uses HTTP, the referral information is not passed through. This means you will see the raw numbers in the acquisition data, but all traffic from digital.ucas.com will appear as ‘direct’ rather than as a referral.

Our open days listings also use https:// – this will affect referrals to your website.

If you have any queries about this, please contact your technology relationship manager.
