Exam levels for reformed AS and A levels

As you will be aware, September 2015 saw the first teaching of reformed AS and A levels in England and Wales, with reformed A levels being first taught in Northern Ireland from 2016.

The introduction of reformed A levels is phased, meaning that learners will be studying both new and old A levels at the same time.

A levels across the UK will be structurally different, with A levels in England having a decoupled AS. Wales and Northern Ireland will retain a coupled AS qualification and content may differ.

We’ve been asked to consider how we can support universities and colleges with the introduction of reformed A levels and provide greater ease of identification of them. With this in mind, we would like your feedback on a proposal to change the exam level code allocated to reformed AS and A levels.

At present, the exam level for unreformed AS and A levels is as follows:

A level AS
A A1

We’re proposing the following exam levels to reformed AS and A levels:

  A level AS
Taken in England RE 1E
Taken in Wales RW 1W
Taken in Northern Ireland RN 1N

This means that, as part of the ABL transaction, you would be able to identify the regulatory criteria an A level adheres to and whether a qualification has been reformed or not.

Prior to implementation, we would welcome your feedback on the value of the above proposal. Please send your comments to Ben Jordan (Senior Policy Executive) at b.jordan@ucas.ac.uk by Tuesday 1 March 2016.
