Confirmation & Clearing 2016 – dry run testing

In preparation for this year’s Confirmation & Clearing, we’ll be carrying out dry run activities to test our IT systems, services, and processes.

Posted Wed 11 May 2016

This will cover a range of tests, to ensure systems and services operate at optimum performance and can deal with maximum load and capacity during peak times. We’ll be using the results from the recent C&C link product survey, along with the actual usage stats from 2015, to inform this testing.

There will be no impact to providers during this testing, as all activities are being carried out internally.

The dry run testing is scheduled to start on Monday 16 May, and will run until Friday 22 July 2016. During this time, we’ll be carrying out the following tests:

  • Performance testing across all services and applications – tests are performed to determine how a system performs in terms of responsiveness and stability under a particular workload.
  • Penetration testing – short simulated attack on a system with the intention of finding security weaknesses, and potentially gaining access to it, its functionality and data.
  • Soak testing – testing a system with a significant load, extended over a significant period of time, to discover how the system behaves under sustained use.
  • High availability (HA) tests – involves a set of policies and procedures, to enable the recovery or continuation of vital technology infrastructure and systems, following a natural or human-induced disaster.
  • Scenario testing – software testing activity that uses hypothetical stories to work through a complex problem or test system.
  • Incident simulation – process testing of IT incidents during critical periods.
  • End-to-end business event tests – ensure applications and systems are working efficiently together and performing as expected at maximum load.

Throughout the testing process, full analysis of the outputs will take place, with the results being used to identify any remedial work which may need to be carried out. The outcomes will be shared in this weekly bulletin.
