Changes to the collection of data in relation to sex and gender identity

As you may be aware, we made some changes to the way we collect data regarding sex and gender identity for the 2015 admissions cycle.

Posted Wed 5 November 2014

As you may be aware, we made some changes to the way we collect data regarding sex and gender identity for the 2015 admissions cycle. Following the launch of these changes, we received feedback from students and representative bodies that the new wording of these questions was potentially offensive to some applicants.

As we do not wish to cause offence or deter anyone from applying, we will be changing the Apply screen text for these questions as follows:

Current question Revised question
Legal sex Gender
Is your gender identity different to that which you were assumed to be at birth? Do you identify as transgender?

Please note:

  • The answers will remain the same.
  • The help text will be updated to reflect these changes.
  • The changes will only impact on the text visible to applicants.
  • The gender identity question will only appear for UK domiciled applicants.
  • We will not amend any field or column names in odbc-link or xml-link.
  • We will amend web-link export files to show new question titles.
  • The data passed to you will not change.
  • All changes will be made during the current cycle.
  • We will confirm when the changes are live.
