The Government is replacing NHS bursaries with loans for new students enrolling on nursing, midwifery, and most allied health professional courses at English providers, from 1 August 2017.
There will be no changes for those students already studying and in receipt of an NHS bursary who started their courses before 1 August 2017. Students who accepted a place in the 2016 application cycle, but deferred and will start their courses after 1 August 2017, will be funded with loans. Repayment terms are the same as for other students who have taken out a student loan at university.
These changes are intended to help grow the healthcare workforce, by allowing universities to offer more places, and give students with an existing qualification the chance to get funding for a second degree.
