BTEC National qualifications

The BTEC Nationals are being revised and will have a larger mandatory core, and some of the assessments will be set and marked externally by Pearson.

Where appropriate, maths and English have been strengthened in the new qualifications, as have research skills. The revised BTEC Nationals have been accredited to the new Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). This has resulted in changes to titling – the word ‘National’ has been reinstated in all titles, the Subsidiary Diploma (one A level size) has changed to the Extended Certificate, and the 90-Credit Diploma to Foundation Diploma.

Students taking these qualifications will mainly be following two-year programmes and progress to HE in 2018, 2019 and 2020 respectively. However, a small number of students are doing one-year programmes in the revised specifications for the Certificate, Extended Certificate and Foundation Diploma – and may progress to HE with one of the new qualifications in 2017.

The new Pearson BTEC Level 3 National suite is included in the listings for the new UCAS Tariff, and a Qualification Information Profile (QIP) will follow in July 2017. Details of the revised specifications can be found at http://qualifications.pearson.com/en/qualifications/btec-nationals/btec-nationals-2016.html.

For the BTEC subjects revised for first teaching in 2016, the QCF specification has had to be extended for another year to accommodate apprenticeship students, as apprenticeship frameworks have not yet been revised. This means some schools and colleges have continued with the QCF specification for another year. Consequently, in 2018, some students progressing to HE will have taken the QCF version, and some will have taken the revised RQF version in those subjects.
