Dr Katherine Lloyd Clark

University of Exeter

Biography

Dr Katherine Lloyd Clark leads the Student Access, Recruitment and Admissions Service at Exeter. Her interest in access and admissions developed from her doctoral research into popular education in Britain and America from 1780. She began her career at the University of Warwick just before Laura Spence became unintentionally famous! Warwick had a distinctive approach to training university managers, offering regular rotation around a wide variety of functions. Katherine’s favourite of these was a very happy year in Schools & Colleges Liaison, learning to navigate every inch of the UK by road.  In 2001, Katherine implemented a lifelong plan to move West (a state of mind as well as a place), arriving at the University of Bath in 2001. This portfolio included the Graduate School (then a peculiar form of trench warfare), Widening Participation (always the first love) and the International Office (whilst the fee differential was still really big!). Katherine left Bath in 2015 to become Director of University Guidance for EF Academy international schools - a fascinating, invaluable and moving insight into the applicant journey from the student perspective. Katherine joined the University of Exeter in 2017 and is, once again, enjoying life in the challenging space where one tries to make real things happen between the strategy and the coal-face. Current projects include an in-depth business improvement plan for Enquiry Management, research into propensity scoring (how likely an individual enquirer or applicant is to convert or enrol) and systems development to support the international applicant experience.
