Summary

Further education colleges in England are a relatively small yet important part of the HE landscape, which has been subject to significant change in the recent years. There is a new regime with OfS coming into full power as a regulator, high costs associated with OfS and QAA fees, intensified competition with universities, and several other factors that impact on the present and future of college HE. On the other hand, there is a steer from the government to promote higher technical education, as highlighted in the recommendations made by the post-18 panel and the current review of level 4/5 that might present some opportunities for colleges.

This session will outline some of the opportunities and challenges presented to FE colleges in the light of recent government policies and how this may impact upon university and college relationships.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand the strengths and challenges of delivering HE in FE.
  • A look at the changing profile of the education landscape including regulation, TEF, Degree Awarding Powers, and Higher and Degree Apprenticeships.
  • Discuss the possible implications of the review of level 4/5 currently being conducted by the government.
