What's covered in this Virtual Work Experience

Introduction to Civil and Structural Engineering & AJP

In this module, you’ll get a broad overview of civil and structural engineering, focusing on the crucial role it plays in shaping our built environment. You’ll also be introduced to AJP, a leading organisation in the civil and structural engineering industry, and discover the variety of career opportunities available. Through this module, you’ll get a solid foundation that you can work with!

Site Investigation

Before any construction begins, understanding the land is crucial. This module delves into site investigation, a vital first step in any civil and structural engineering project. You’ll learn about the techniques used to assess the ground conditions, from soil testing to geotechnical surveys. Through interactive activities, you’ll get to put what you’ve learned into practice!

Flood Risk

Flooding is a significant concern in civil and structural engineering, and managing this risk is essential. In this module, you’ll explore how civil and structural engineers assess and mitigate flood risks in various environments. You’ll learn about flood mapping, the impact of climate change, and the engineering solutions used to protect communities. You’ll see how these principles are applied to safeguard people and property from the threat of flooding.

Building Use

Buildings serve many purposes, from homes to hospitals, and each has specific requirements that must be considered during the design and construction phases. This module explores the diverse uses of buildings and how civil and structural engineers tailor their designs to meet these needs. You’ll gain insight into the factors that influence building design. Interactive exercises will challenge you to think like a civil and structural engineer, taking you one step further to your dream role!

Foul and Surface Water Drainage

Effective drainage systems are crucial to the functionality and hygiene of any building or urban area. This module covers the principles of foul and surface water drainage, explaining how civil and structural engineers design systems to manage foul waste and rainwater efficiently and contribute to the project's environmental betterment through the use of sustainable urban drainage systems.

Ground Modelling

Ground modelling is an essential aspect of civil and structural engineering, helping engineers visualise and plan for the unique challenges of the natural landscape. In this module, you’ll learn how engineers use cutting-edge software and techniques to model the ground for construction projects. From understanding topography to predicting soil behaviour, you’ll explore how ground modelling informs decisions about where and how to build. Interactive activities will allow you to understand their impact on project outcomes.

Substructure

The substructure of a building is its foundation—quite literally. This module focuses on the design and construction of substructures, which provide essential support for buildings and other structures. You’ll learn about different types of foundations, how engineers choose the appropriate foundation based on site conditions, and the construction techniques used to ensure stability. Through this module, you’ll see how critical the substructure is to the overall success of a project.

Superstructure

In the final module, you’ll move above ground to explore the superstructure, which includes everything from the walls to the roof. You’ll delve into the materials, design principles, and construction methods used to create the visible part of a building. This module highlights how civil and structural engineers ensure that superstructures are not only safe and durable but also aesthetically pleasing and fit for purpose.

When will I hear back if I have been successful with my application?

Once you have applied for your programme, you will receive a confirmation email. You will be notified about the outcome of your application via email at least 3 days before the programme start date. Good luck!

Can I apply to multiple programmes?

Yes, you can sign up to multiple programmes with us. The live talks will be available as recordings, so you can catch up on any potential clashes.

Who can take part in the programme? (Age limits, some programmes have location constraints but most don’t etc.)

Most of our programmes require students to be in school/college. Some programmes require students to be based in specific regions of the UK, this is stipulated by the organisations themselves, and is not defined by Springpod.

However, the ages mentioned on our programmes are more of a guideline than a strict limit. As such, we more than welcome older students to apply as well!

I have a question about my assignment

How long does it take for assignments to be reviewed?

Assignments can take up to a week or longer to review and be marked complete. Rest assured, it will be reviewed soon and your certificate will be generated once your programme has been marked as complete.

What do I do if I upload the wrong file?

If you make a mistake when uploading a file, please email hello@springpod.com. We will be able to make a note on our system. Don’t worry, the outcome of your programme will not be affected by this.

I have a question about the programme dates, deadline or workload
