About us

At Portsmouth, we give you the skills, knowledge and confidence you need to make your life anything you want it to be. As a Gold rated university in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF 2023), we’re respected for the quality of our teaching, learning and student outcomes.

Here, you’ll get career-ready. Our graduate employment rates are some of the UK’s best, with 94 per cent in work or study (HESA Graduate Outcomes Survey 2021/22). Courses are designed to give you skills employers are looking for, often using simulated working environments and professional equipment. That's why we're ranked in the top 20 in England for academic support and learning resources (National Student Survey, 2023).

With us, you’ll become an independent learner – and we’ll support you to grow and succeed. If you need help, we act. Everyone here can get outstanding support for everything from mental and physical health, through to money, housing or a part-time job.

Introducing Connected Degrees | From the University of Portsmouth

As well as being able to take a traditional sandwich placement before your third year on most of our undergraduate degrees, you can now take your work placement after your final year. We call courses with this placement option Connected Degrees. Portsmouth is the only UK university that offers flexible sandwich placements for undergraduates. The opportunity is available to UK students joining us from September 2024. You’ll be able to decide to pursue a placement up until February of your final year.

What makes us different

Portsmouth is the only university to offer Connected Degrees: a three-year course with a flexible fourth year placement. Most courses can be Connected Degrees.

This gives you more time to explore your career choices, and to find the perfect placement. It also means you can stay connected to the same friends throughout your studies. Then glide into professional life, with full support from the University throughout your placement. And if you prefer a placement year at the traditional time, you can opt to do it after year two.

As well as paid placements with employers, UK students can choose a self-employed placement as a traditional sandwich year, getting a start-up or freelance career off the ground with expert support.

I visited the University of Portsmouth and instantly loved the lively energy and the campus feel.
