Take this Subject Spotlight to...

This Subject Spotlight begins by exploring the early Middle Ages (500-1100), focusing on the social, cultural, and linguistic changes that shaped medieval England. We will examine the arrival and impact of the Anglo-Saxons, the spread of Christianity, and the blending of Viking and Anglo-Saxon traditions. Additionally, this spotlight highlights the significance of astronomy and magic in medieval England, particularly through the works of Bede, who was a monk, scholar, and the first scientist in England. We will also take a closer look at J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, including The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, to understand how the early Middle Ages influenced his fictional worlds. Finally, you will participate in a practical activity that involves reworking a translation of an Old English text to enhance your critical analysis skills.
