Life at National Grid

At National Grid, we keep people connected and society moving. But it’s so much more than that. We’re dreamers, big-thinkers, innovators and builders.

We offer world-class training and development opportunities – including our outstanding residential training centre at Eakring in Nottinghamshire. We invest in your development, so we can build a better future together in an environment where every voice matters and everyone can power the currents of change. We know you’ll give your best when you’re passionate about what you’re doing, so we offer mentorship and guidance to shape your career in a direction that’s right for you. There are hundreds of paths waiting for you at National Grid, whatever you’re doing, we want everyone to be themselves at work. Our 16 employee resource groups (ERGs), or networks, from minority ethnic backgrounds to faith communities and the LGBTQI+ community, provide spaces for open discussion, where ideas on how to drive ever-greater inclusivity both in and out of the office can be shared. Across our business we have many people who have stayed with us for upwards of twenty years, which we think tells its own story. If you join us on one of our apprenticeships, internships or graduate schemes, you too could shape your career and find your superpower.

Testimonials

You get so much out of an apprenticeship.

You get so much out of an apprenticeship. There are so many skills I’ve learnt, from electrical wiring, time management and on-site experience to learning to switch the equipment on and off safely and how to be in charge of jobs.

I wanted to join to make a difference.

I came for an interview and had a site visit and it was just amazing, everything I saw looked so interesting. I saw other girls and women doing the job which was really promising. Everyone was so encouraging of each other, it’s all equal. I wanted to join to make a difference.

I would highly recommend an engineering apprenticeship

Whilst I didn’t have an engineering background, National Grid looked at other qualities I bring to the role. I learn on the job, theory-based learning and practical training and there are countless opportunities available. I would highly recommend an engineering apprenticeship.
There is so much variety in what you get to do at National Grid. We play a really important role in all the significant infrastructure development that is going on in the UK to enable the green revolution. The is so many opportunities to move and transition and develop - one of the things which really attracted me was getting to I knew I would get that development opportunity to see what would suit me for a longer term career.
